Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
