As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
