The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
